Conservation
Departments
Headed by Stefan Dedecek, Professional Associate,
AIC. The laboratory in Oberlin Ohio is dominated by the new, spacious
painting conservation studio which is equipped with an 8 x 12 foot vacuum
lining table, plenty of space, and 14 ft. ceilings with skylights. While
paintings of all periods receive conservation here, Stefan Dedecek, through
his post-graduate training at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York,
prefers Old Master paintings and those generally of the 15th17th
centuries. The paintings department is also currently involved in a three-year
contract with the General Services Administration (referenced above) as
a subcontractor for Page Conservation, Inc. of Washington, DC. for the
conservation of paintings and murals at GSA properties in seventeen midwestern
states.
Headed by Gina McKay Lodge, Professional Associate,
AIC. Through the training and senior-level experience of paper conservator
Gina McKay Lodge, the paper conservation department is noted for its safe
handling of extremely difficult treatments, particularly those involving
the removals of degrading backings and the removal of stains from fine
art with sensitive media. A very well equipped studio with suction table,
suction disk and large sinks allow a wide variety of treatments to be
performed.
Headed by Thomas J. Podnar, Professional Associate,
AIC. This department is currently involved in a three-year contract with
the General Services Administration (GSA) providing conservation assessments,
treatments, and maintenance on sculpture at federal buildings and other
GSA property in all regions of GSA in the nation. The department is and
has been engaged by municipalities, universities, museums, artists, and
private collectors. Services from this department cover bronze and other
metals, stone, cements, mortars and the technologies of fountains. Fountain
engineering in a conservation context is a unique service of this department.
Thomas Podnar is also a member of NACE (The National Association of Corrosion
Engineers).
Headed by Robert G. Lodge, Professional Associate,
AIC. This department is also involved in the above mentioned GSA sculpture
contract. Many painted sculptures of the 1970's and 1980's are now in
great need of repainting, especially the monumental outdoor steel sculptures
of those periods. Through industry training and continuing education the
laboratory offers expert industry-standard services which bring the sophisticated
materials and technologies of the modern industrial coatings industry
to the aid of these sculptures. Services include coatings failure analysis,
specifications writing, coating application inspections, field and shop
application services, and national contracting. Robert Lodge is a member
of SSPC (the Society for Protective Coatings; formerly the Steel Structures
Painting Council) and a member of the Construction Specifications Institute.
